There are many situations you may find this. This is where shorthand becomes valuable. Which ones you have found them in?

I just read that Barnes and Noble discourages laptop uses. So this might be a good reason to know shorthand. Sure you can take a picture of something with your cell phone, but it might be safer to write it in shorthand.

Medical centers have certain areas you can't use your cell phone or any electronic equipment. If you need to take notes for a loved one, shorthand can be a way to get all the information down.

Some public areas that are on business property might also restrict the use of cell phone. Mostly it would be talking or loud clicking when texting or any other noise, but they just might ban it all together. Since they own the property, they can make that rule. So if you need to take notes or write something down and even try to use your cell phone to write a text, you might get approached. Shorthand and a notepad come in handy here.

Or any lobby, office, salon, doctor's office, dentist office or spa. Signs may be posted so they will let clients and patients know that cell phone use is frowned upon and to please step outside to take calls.

Using Shorthand in the Library has tips and pictures where you may not be able to use an electronic device. Most just have you turn off the sound and maybe put it on vibrate, but some places are more strict.

Should laptops and phones be banned from meetings?Link to article here. It talks about how we try to multi-task and "Research shows that trying to accomplish multiple tasks at once compromises productivity. ". Several places are trying to eliminate that. We had one director who tried that and suggested everyone bring a paper notebook to take notes in.
