Gregg Writer, January 15, 1913
Mr. Douglas jokingly said that the teacher should give a little dictation with a lead pencil in his mouth as a substitute for the stub of a cigar which some employers seem to find necessary when they are dictating.

From a 1904 general shorthand magazine: If you can't read it: Business men of Allentown, PA., have adopted resolutions not to employ as stenographer any person frequenting dances or low resorts. They argument advanced is that no girl can keep a clear head after a night's frolic.

I'm thinking these Dictaphone voices sounded like the first computer voices. Very monotone and bland.

When you are called upon to take dictation, always spend at least five minutes looking for your notebook. Never dust your machine. A layer of dirt will convince your employer that you are very busy, and he will probably raise your salary. If your employer is in a rush for a particular later, always reserve that one for the last. It will make him take an interest in you. If the mail is especially heavy, take a day off. It will make your employer appreciate your services. Always come late in the morning. It will show your independence. When taking dictation, stop every now and then to sharpen your pencil. It will give the dictator time to collect his thoughts. Above all things don't forget your chewing gun when taking dictation. It will remind your employer of the farm and the brindle cow in the shadow of the barn. -------------- This was quoted in a book, from "A method of Making Shorthand Dictation Drills Interesting" John Robert Gregg In the book Problems of teaching shorthand in the high school by Ferrari, Marion Elaine Publication date 1933 archive.org/details/problemsofteachi00ferr/page/48Read more: greggshorthand.proboards.com/thread/1620/problems-teaching-shorthand-high-school#ixzz5Ws38iXek
