Such as when they change the pubic transportation systems and they let the public come in to hear what they are going to say.
Maybe some foundation is having an event. If you're interested, take your steno book with you to take notes or write down observations.
Other ideas for community events:
• Art • Music • Performances • Lectures & Books • Festivals • Sports • Charitable Events
I know the library in my city has several events, usually on Saturday's.
If you search for your city and "events" you can find something. Check your library listing on the internet.

News stations or websites, as well as public TV and radio stations might have community events. We had a public access TV station once and it would list them on the bottom on a scrolling area. Plus once in a while when there wasn't any program, it would list them on that TV station.

Tourists sites. You might have one "visit [this city] calendar of events" type thing. Check out your local tourists websites and see what might be going on. There sometimes are "lectures" or presentations of community events.
