If you'd like to keep a lot here, choose anyone you want to use for their board, or your own. If you choose you can have others comment (please say so in the first post) this may help keep you motivated. If you prefer to just have it as a log let others know so you can just post your update (of course don't count on everyone reading this, some miss it... so you may get a few comments). This is just to keep your record handy and in one spot so it won't get lost in all the other boards. Plus you can see others logs here too. Of course you are welcome to post them anywhere you want, or on paper. If you'd like you can even post them on a blog and keep your "homework" there as well to share with others. Please see "Ways to Post Your Shorthand Notes": greggshorthand.proboards.com/thread/449/ways-post-shorthand-notes
Start a new thread for your own personal assignment log.
Good luck!

I guess I can log here, there, anywhere! I might be going through the book a little fast. I'm not sure. I'm overlapping lessons, spending just a couple of days on each lesson. The first 3 lessons were so easy for me I finished them in 3 days. What I'm doing now is something like this: Day one: Review Lesson A. Introduce Lesson B. Day two: Review both lessons A and B. Day three: Review Lesson B and introduce Lesson C. Day Four: Review both lessons B and C. Day Five: Review Lesson C and introduce Lesson D. ....and so on. Notice by doing it this way, I actually go over each lesson 3 times. However, I'm more than willing to spend extra time on a lesson if I feel it's needed. When I say "review", it means just reading over the lesson without writing it out. When I introduce a lesson, I read and write it out and make flash cards of brief forms. I also read the graded reader that goes along with the corresponding lesson. I haven't studied yet today, but I plan to go over Lesson 6 and start Lesson 7. I welcome any comments, encouragement, or suggestions on any of my logs at any time. ;D

Something else I am doing is covering the words in the general exercise to see if I can read the shorthand okay. Since I haven't printed off this PDF yet and am doing everything from off the computer, that means I have to lay a piece of cardboard or a stiff magazine or something lightly against my monitor. I'll be so glad when I can get this printed! But it works for now.

I've studied Chapter 1 (units 1 through 3).
I started studying Shorthand on August 7th. I would mark Chapter 1 complete as of August 16th. I've begun Unit 4 on the 18th, although I only really studied it this morning.
EDIT: I should note that I'm using the Anniversary Manual specifically. I don't go forward until I've done the diction practice at the end of the unit at least once through and through. It takes more than an hour of focused study for me to get through a unit. Even an easy unit like Unit 5 (which is entirely based on the letter "S" and nothing else) can take more than an hour. I don't seem to have the time to get the solid full hour of practice every day however. Even then, it may take multiple reads before I can go through the diction exercise without any issues.
I think the recommendation to do one chapter every two weeks is reasonable. It seems to be the appropriate pace for self-study. You can accomplish it much faster if you have the time, but this seems to be a very time-limited practice. Fluency just takes work after all...

I think the recommendation to do one chapter every two weeks is reasonable. It seems to be the appropriate pace for self-study. You can accomplish it much faster if you have the time, but this seems to be a very time-limited practice. Fluency just takes work after all... Another reason is because even though the chapters are short, there is a lot to learn in that one chapter. In the Funcitonal Method some lessons don't have any new theory, just reading or very little theory. Then lots of reading. And you are correct Fluence just takes work after all... shorthand is not an overnight subject but it can be lifelong skill. Feel free to add other reading material to your learning. Speed Study, 1917 - is a good one, even though it's 1917 and Pre-Anniversary, it can still be used, only a few things were changed. Fundamental Drills - which is Anniversary and a good addition. Graded Readings - another pre-anniversary, but still a good book to use if you want. Again, you do not have to use any of these. They are supplimental and may help. You can just read them, refer to them when you have time, skim them, or even fully devote to them (reading and writing).

Thanks. I was already looking into the Fundamental Drills as sort of a "final test" to determine how good my fluency is. To tell the truth, I have issues reading the Fundamental Drills for Unit 4... let alone writing them. I think its because they completely lack a transcription key, so I'm definitely having to be "honest" about my reading ability.
Still, that makes them a very good test for fluency, so they're definitely a good study tool.

Just a reminder that these logs you use (either on here or on your own) can help keep you motivated. You can see your progress and how far you've come from starting. This is great if you can't possibly do a lesson a week (some people can't), then you can see you're at least doing a lesson every now and then and sometimes every week. Also if you need more encouragement, please indicate that others can comment in the positive.

Remember, it's best to start a NEW thread for your own personal assignment log. Just a suggestion. Also indicate if you'd like others to comment (congratulate, motivate, maybe even say a little word to keep you in the right direction) or if you want it just exclusively for you to post your assignment tracking.
