From the book Obstacles in Shorthand Speed, this was noted: The variety of matter used in dictation in the advanced stages also becomes an important aid in developing knowledge of the language as well as to increase the writer's vocabulary and thus lessen the number of words which cause hesitation by their unfamiliarity.

Review your shorthand dictation notes.
Once in a while, go back a few pages in your steno book or other shorthand notes (pages should be dated in the lower right hand corner) and read what you wrote. This gives you a good idea on where you stand in your shorthand.
Are you making the same mistakes? --If so, practice those on a regular basis when you come back to study.
Can you read most of it with easy? --If so, this is great. --If not, find the material you took it from and see where you need more work.
You could even copy or take the same dictation again. See where your shorthand penmanship is at this point. Hopefully it's improved. You may need to see where it needs improvement or where you have excelled.

Keep working on longer and longer dictation. If you have a basic book to record dictation on or just have recorded dictation for basic grammar, take it over and over to practice.
Yes you will want a variety of dictation, but you will also want to practice long takes. This gives you exercise in writing more.
Five minute dictation tests were the norm for testing students on speed. If you can write for longer amounts of time, five minutes doesn't seem too long and you can keep up your speed. It's easy to write very fast for one minute, but when you have to space that out to three and five minute tests, it isn't so easy. You will need to pace yourself. Taking longer dictation, even at a lower speed then you're use to, will help you with five minute dictation.

Work on carrying longer and longer dictation. Even though you may be past "intermediate" you need to be able to carry words from a longer piece of dictation if you are to advance in your shorthand studies.
